Bye Bye Birdie Asbury Park Theatre reviews
Robert Plant in Minneapolis
I thought the Bye Bye Birdie show at the State Theater exceeded my expectations, even though it's not the kind of show one should go to expecting to hear their favorite Led Zeppelin songs or even to hear them played the way they remember them. I had seen Plant with Jimmy Page in 1998 in Fargo, N.D. and found that show really lacking. If you check the low ratings following Plant's Band of Joy tour on this page, you'll see lots of one-star reviews from disgruntled fans who obviously were expecting a Led Zep greatest hits show with the original arrangements intact. At the time, they seemed to run through what I thought was a blah setlist with a noticeable lack of interest. I always find that to be somewhat surprising--Plant has made no secret of where his interests lie, and it ain't with Zep. Plus, he's been doing the roots thing for quite a while now. What I didn't expect was how good he would sound or how tight his band would be. He was also very personable and humble. I went to the show with an 'all right, I gave you another chance, now impress me' attitude. Covers of songs by Minnesota artists Low and Bob Dylan were appreciated by the crowd. The opening of Black Dog, recast as an intense blues shuffle, was enough to get me to go along for the ride. Plant's people must have told security to back off before the show. And strangely for the State, a no-problem-go-right-ahead attitude by security over the use of cameras seemed to make people happy. In all, it was a great evening. I go to a LOT of shows and have Jeff Beck coming up this weekend. A great, fun show--just don't expect a mini-Led Zeppelin performance.
